This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 2/3 combo class is in great need of equipment to help them read. Many of my students come from difficult family situations in a high-needs California urban community. Some of their parents have substance abuse problems, some are single parents, and some are working several jobs. One of my students is living in a homeless shelter. They are not getting enough reading at home! Our Title 1 public school has no supply or equipment budget because of California's financial crisis.
These 2nd and 3rd grade students are bright but have not gotten enough mental stimulation. They are beginning readers who are excited about books but don't get enough exposure to them. I want to saturate our class with books. I want them to see them, hear them and experience the wonderful world of literature. Can you help me reach them?
By purchasing a big book stand, I will be able to display big books and allow students to interact with books more fully. They will be able to read them in their spare time. Currently, our big books are being stored in another room because they don't fit anywhere. Students love to read these giant books!!
Another need for our class is a listening center. I want students to be able to read along while they listen to the words being spoken. Because this is a combination class, it would be extremely helpful to know my second graders are reading an appropriate book while I'm teaching a 3rd grade lesson, for example. A listening center would be the perfect addition to our classroom. I have wonderful literature on tape and CD, but don't have the headphones or player to play them. Please help us if you can!
These kids come from difficult circumstances, but they are so appreciative of your support. It makes them feel special to know that there are people out there who care about them and provide them with materials that their families can't. They've learned how to write thank you notes, and they don't even complain! Thank you for considering our project. My students and I would be extremely grateful for your help.
