This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach second grade in an under-resourced urban community. My classroom is an inclusion classroom so half of the students have been identified as needing special education services.
With the special education population in my classroom, students rely heavily on visual cues, images, sounds, and videos in order to understand the content in a sophisticated way. We are fortunate to have access to a large library of multimedia to share with our students but no way to show it. Occasionally, we will create visual aids on posters but the content online is high quality and a shame to waste. Currently, if we want to show even a short clip of a video to accompany a lesson, we must coordinate with the 23 other classrooms to secure the single LCD projector available for classroom use. The other option is to show video on a 12 inch laptop monitor and that of course is not ideal for a group of 22 students.
With an LCD projector, we would have the freedom to incorporate engaging multimedia throughout the day. Students would be able to see and hear the material with ease on a large projection screen. Our visual learners would be able to see a variety of images in order to better internalize the material whether it is a math algorithm, a map in social studies, or a graphic organizer in reading.
Your help will ensure that my students, all with a variety of learning modalities, are able to access and engage with the material.
