2nd Graders Needs Big Books for Literacy Stations

My project needs big books for students to use in the big book literacy station in addition to participating in shared reading activities with the big books.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. S.'s classroom raised $572

This project is fully funded

I teach 2nd grade at an elementary school in Round Rock, TX. My class consists of diverse learners that come from numerous types of cultures and backgrounds. This will be my second year teaching. I have invested a great deal of my own money in developing a comfortable and safe classroom environment for my students this past year. My goal for this year is to enhance my classroom resources to empower my students to have opportunities for success with literacy. Numerous researchers support the philosophy of having students participate in literacy work stations (also known as centers). During stations the teacher has uninterrupted time to work with students on reading and writing skills in small groups. I have designed my classroom literacy stations after the author Debbie Diller's book "Literacy Work Stations: Making Centers Work." A literacy station that is part of this design is the "Big Book Work Station." At this station students are able to practice various types of reading and writing skills that the teacher has previously modeled for students. Typically the teacher introduces one big book a week before putting it into the big book station. Since there are approximately 36 weeks in a school year, I would like to build up my big book library to have about 30 big books. My school library does offer big books for teachers to check out. However, the amount is very limited and the few we have are in poor condition. I believe that my students will greatly benefit from having exposure to numerous big books of different genres, both fiction and non-fiction. Many of the books I have requested for my big book station are favorite stories of children. Students feel successful when reading big books they enjoy, as well as have repeated exposure to. There are many aspects that go into making literacy work stations effective for students’ learning. An important aspect is that students have access to the resources they need to foster learning, such as big books. Literacy work stations are wonderful for students because teachers are able to drive their learning towards what students as individuals need. Students have opportunities to work individually, in pairs, and small groups during work stations. I believe the first step in making literacy stations more beneficial to my students is to have the proper resources! Thank you for your time!
