2nd Grade Rocks! Gem Collection Kits Needed! (Title 1)

Help me give my students individual gem mining collections to gain some hands-on learning experiences and discover some gems to keep at the same time!

My Project

I have a class of students who love to learn science this year! I want to extend this learning experience with some more hands-on learning opportunities. Through this project, students will be given the chance to learn more about rocks and minerals by mining through their own individual collections. The collections that are sent by the Diamond Del company will also give the student's a chance to find special gems as well. I love this idea to not only have made learning come alive in a real and concrete way, but it will also allow students to keep their findings. What a wonderful keepsake not just for their science education, but as a unique 2nd-grade keepsake as well.

This project would allow science to become more than just something the kids read about in books- They will gain first-hand knowledge with hands-on learning!

My students live in a high-poverty area. We are a Title I school, funds are not always available for materials and resources such as these gem collections. I want school to be special, memorable, and fun for the kids. I plan to also elaborate and extend this learning activity by providing books in the classroom about rocks and minerals, as well as gems. It is also my goal to set up a virtual guest speaker visit with a geologist as well. Kids have suffered so much during this pandemic. They deserve every chance possible to have fun, be happy, and learn at the same time! Thank you for your time and support of my classroom.
