My students need colored pencils, erasers, blending stumps and other drawing materials. We are starting a drawing unit and are without some essential materials.
My students really love to come to art class every day. They are my little artists! They are able to express themselves in a positive way when a lot of them are dealing with negative circumstances at home. Our budgets keep getting cut for supplies but our expectations remain high. This school is a Title 1 school and most students are on free or reduced lunch. These students are so sweet, caring, and talented and deserve the best materials available. They are eager to learn about techniques and artists. I want them to apply what they learn to their artwork.
My Project
Both art teachers at our school are having our students participate in a nonprofit organization called the Memory Project. The Memory Project is where students create portraits of orphans from around the world.
This semester, we are creating portraits from orphans and refugees from Syria.
The portraits are given back to the orphans. We got a grant to pay to do this project and the money goes back into the community. Students are learning how to draw facial features and the correct facial measurements. Not only are they learning a new technique, they are learning about other people around the world and the struggles that are happening in the world today.
We have nice drawing pencils but will use the blending stumps, erasers, and pencil sharpeners to help draw and shade the portraits. Each portrait includes the favorite color of the orphan. The colored pencils will be used to decorate the backgrounds of the portraits.
