21st Century Writing

My Students

A Chinese proverb states "Tell me and I forget. Show me and I remember. Involve me and I understand." I fully believe that this is true. My students need to be involved and engaged to make the most of their time in the classroom.

My students attend a high-poverty high school on the outskirts of an inner city.

They are all identified with some sort of disability and are being served by the special education department in a resource (small-group) setting. Some are following the Occupational Course of Study (OCS) which is vocationally based and offers functional career training as well as academics. They are, without a doubt, 21st century learners--they are connected technologically at all times and are not engaged by the simple overhead or PowerPoint presentation anymore.

My Project

I have two activities in mind for these two Flip cameras for my Occupational Course of Study (OCS) English II class. The first is for the students to make movie trailers for a dramatic scene they are writing. Students will be able to cast their classmates to star in their trailers and then film and edit their trailers to share with the rest of the class. The second activity is to help the students work on their presentation skills. They will be able to read a piece they've written into the camera and then watch it back to critique themselves on their presentation skills, which they will need to use in OCS English IV when they present their senior projects.

I think it's important for students to feel connected and engaged in school.

For students who spend more time watching TV each week than they do reading, seeing a scene come to life will make it more concrete and engaging. Also, students today sometimes struggle with public speaking. This gives them a stress-free environment to practice in, which will affect all aspects of their lives.
