21st Century Reading

My students need an Ipod touch to scan books in and out of our classroom library. Students will also benefit by using a tablet to read on in the classroom.

My Students

We are lucky enough to have a large classroom library with over 1000 books. However, managing our library using a paper sign-out sheet has proved to be difficult. We would like to scan in books using an Ipod touch. Also, we would like to access our textbooks and novels using a tablet computer.

My students are a diverse group of learners.

Our school is in a small town but students come from a wide geographic area. Some students live in a rural setting while others are from the city and suburbs. We have mixed ability classes where are learners are supported. I teach one social studies class and four language arts classes. I will also have another reading group that meets several hours a week. We have many school resources online but many students do not have their own cell phone or tablet to access online texts. We could share and rotate devices so all learners could use them.

My Project

In each class, I have a student volunteer librarians who help shelve, check books in and out, and helps students find books that they love. However, this job has become overwhelming due to the large number of books in the library. I found a free site where we could go to scan books in but you need a device with a camera which we do not have. Students would be able to use the Ipod Touch and tablet to scan books and also to read them. All students could share these items to access apps and the Internet.

Using technology is a big motivation for some students to engage with the class.

Students can not only scan our classroom books in but share the devices to read on during class. Students who may be reluctant to engage with the text will enjoy using the pen and touch features of the devices. For many students, this will be their first time using such technology. We are trying to create life-long readers and 21st century learners. These devices will help us reach those goals. Thank you.
