"Wait a minute Mrs. C, don't stop! Can we do a few more!" That is the sound of my eager learners in my 6th grade class. They are eager to master any mathematics skill or problem I put before them, and they know they need to continue practicing on their own. They are amazing!
My school is located in the inner city.
As a school we support our students and their families physically, emotionally, socially, and of course, academically. We provide the students with free breakfast and lunch. Most of our students come from low-income, single parent homes. Located here in southeast Michigan our children, their families, and the school have been impacted by the move from being an industrialized community to a more technological focused society.
The technology access that my students have in the 21st century is limited and the opportunity for them to use the technology as a learning tool is by far very limited. My class is without ANY handheld technology that can support their learning in mathematics through projects and individualized learning opportunities. Being able to create videos and take photos of the mathematics that is in our environment would be just the beginning of changing our learning community through digital-media with critical thinking enhanced.
My Project
Having 5 tablets in my classroom would allow me to fulfill a few objectives. The first would be to have students create videos demonstrating the mathematics in real life applications that they would create in small groups. The videos would allow students to illuminate their understanding of the mathematics they are learning and how it applies to the real world. In addition, the videos would be utilized to teach others. The second would be to provide students with some individual time on the tablets to practice the concepts through the videos that their classmates have created to teach others. The third would be to create a blended learning environment in the 21st century that provides for educational needs being met for ALL students.
Your gift will improve my classroom by giving my students access to handheld technology in the classroom.
This handheld technology will give me the ability to facilitate the learning in a blended environment where students are engaged in research, reviewing, practicing, and enrichment all at one time. Every student getting what he/she needs simultaneously.
