When my students try to use the old tape player, it either sounds terrible or it "eats" the old tapes up. We also have to hook up four headphone sets to it so four people can listen to the story. The headphones are very cheap (from the dollar store) and they get easily tangled together.
My school is a Title One school in NC, with many students who are high poverty.
I have several IAS (Intensive Academic Support) students and ESL (English as a Second Language) in my class. Many of those students cannot read and depend highly on our listening center to read books to them.
My Project
To have individual CD players for them to listen to books, would be amazing to them as well as the rest of my class. The CD players would help my students learn the enjoyment of reading and literature. They would also be able to check them out and take them home. This would allow their parents, who may have limited English, read a story with them.
Any donation for this project would make such a difference in the lives of my students who have extreme needs and reading disabilities.
It would help them develop a true love for reading instead of pure frustration, as many of them feel.
