My Students

How many of you have ever encountered a child who was not a fan of reading? How many of you would be willing to place a bet that that same child loves any form of technology? What if I told you that there was a way to use technology to create an interest in reading? Trust me. . .keep reading!

Our class is composed of some of the most fun-loving, energetic, and curious kids you may ever come across.

They come from all different backgrounds, races, cultures, and locations. Our school is filled with teachers who love their job and love their students. Unfortunately, because of budget cuts within our state over the past several years, we are unable to provide our students with the technology necessary to keep up with our ever changing society. Our one classroom computer is not much help when it comes to a class of 20+ students.

My Project

Picture this: these kids have just left the big world of kindergarten and have now entered the "new and scary world" of first grade! Can you remember what it was like when you were in first grade? Do you remember snack time, play time, maybe even coloring? Well, not anymore! First grade has become THE big reading year. Retell, fluency, oral AND written comprehension, oh my! Most of them have just learned to read sentences and short stories, and now they have all of these new strategies thrown at them to use while they read. This causes many to shut down when reading altogether! With each of the tablets, I would be able to download a reading app that I have purchased for our class. Students would have individual access to thousands of books in their personalized library, as well as activities to practice all of the strategies I mentioned above. Because they would be using a tablet, they would definitely be engaged and more receptive to reading all types of books. How great is that?

These 5 Fire tablets would greatly benefit our classroom.

Struggling readers would be able to build their confidence by listening to stories being read before having to read them independently. Higher level readers could record themselves reading their favorite book to share with their classmates. The opportunities for these kids would be endless. The funding of this project would allow my students to combine learning with fun and wouldn't make the tasks presented to them seem so daunting.
