"The universe is full of magical things, patiently waiting for our wits to grow sharper." (Eden Phillpotts). My students strive each day to rise above personal circumstances. Hands-on learning in science offers them the opportunity to enhance their higher level thinking skills.
My students live in a high poverty district with free and reduced lunches as part of their daily existence.
Even with their circumstances, they remain positive and excited about learning. Our school is moving toward 21st century skills in an effort to reduce the drop out rate and better prepare students for employment.
My Project
Cells are the smallest form of life—the functional and structural units of all living things. At any given time, each cell is doing thousands of jobs. These tasks are essential for life. Unfortunately, cells are one of the more difficult concepts for students to understand from the inner workings of organelles to meiosis.
The materials selected offer my students the opportunity to explore cells (via hands-on activities) and to see cells (via animations). From hands on models of cells for students to manipulate to interactive video games on cell functions…remember having fun while learning is the best way to keep students interested!
I want my students to perform at the highest levels on the state tests so they can go to the college of their choice. I believe these resources will bring excitement to my students and thus a greater understanding of these difficult concepts. The next great scientist maybe sitting in my classroom. Inspiring them to pursue science may change all our lives!
For the past two years my students have obtained some of the highest scores on the NYS Regents exam in biology.
I want to continue that trend. I want my students to succeed and move to great heights when they leave my classroom. Please help my students in their quest for scientific knowledge. Thank you.
