Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The students in our school come from very diverse backgrounds and cultures. We are a Title I school and over 60% of our students receive free/reduced lunch. The diversity brings many perspectives and new and creative ideas but the economic disadvantages can be limiting for students who do not have resources outside of the classroom.
This year our middle school students are missing precious instructional time due to absenteeism, suspensions and avoidance leading them to become discouraged and disengaged.
The students in our school come from very diverse backgrounds and cultures, and often do not have technology available at home that allows them to succeed at higher levels.
My Project
My students can lack a connection with their school environment because they do not have access to technology that most students in other districts have. This results in them becoming disengaged and can lead to an increase in absenteeism.
The goal of this project is to give students access to technology in our classroom that students will be excited to utilize during small group work where they will create and collaborate on a variety of exciting historical inquiries.
In a previous project, we were generously donated clipboards and whiteboards. These supplies made traveling around the classroom and other areas of the school easier for my students during their Historical Investigations where they gather evidence from primary and secondary sources.
Once funded, the resources in this project will promote collaborative efforts in the classroom. I will create a positive and inspiring learning environment by creating a collaborative corner in my classroom. The students will be able to use their Chromebooks which were recently funded and the iPad to project their ideas, projects, or tasks to the TV for their group members to view and use to engage in a conversation. The students will also be able to utilize the iPad to discuss creative solutions, plan future tasks and create dynamic digital presentations.
These resources will ultimately help to facilitate the exchange of student ideas and help them work on 21st-century skills which they will utilize not only during their time in my classroom but in their lives after middle school.
