My Students

Do you remember watching The Jetsons as a kid...dreaming and wondering when the world would be run by robots and cars would fly? Just this week I saw a flying car on the news, and my 3rd graders are technology artists that are ready to unleash their creative art power on the world of robotics!

My students attend an inner city, Title I, Arts in Basic Curriculum (ABC) School in South Carolina.

They are an amazing bunch of students who face unimaginable struggles at home, yet succeed by leaps and bounds at school through our ARTS curriculum. Daily, in my class you will see miming, dancing, singing, African drumming, painting, creating; ARTS at their finest, incorporated into our daily curriculum of math, science, social studies, and reading. When asked to describe how I use the ARTS in my room, all I can say is that it is part of our DNA. Students write songs to help them learn curriculum. They mime to learn S.S. facts. They create art displays to portray science experiments. Recently, after a visit from our district science coach, they have expressed an interest to create art in a new medium with Lego Robotics. The robotics kit he brought was amazing, but unfortunately our time with it was very limited. I can only imagine the creativity that would flow if we had more time.

My Project

In the world we live, art is being created in non-traditional mediums on a daily basis. Computers have allowed for creations that our grandparents could only dream of, and they will continue to create art in a way that our present-day minds cannot conceive. Technology will only be as good as the students that have the ARTS minds that will create it. Using the Lego Robotics Mindstorms, my 3rd grade students will design, construct, and program their own robots! The laptops requested will be used for design and programming. After programming, students will then use the robots for a variety of lessons, including drawing and painting still figures in art class. In our nation, there is a push for science and technology growth, but I am insist that technology will only grow if there are arts students behind the creative ideas that technology will birth. This project will allow my arts students to create in this new, non-traditional medium and take art education into the 21st century.

This project is an amazing opportunity for my current students!

I cannot even begin to imagine the robotic art they will create once these supplies are in our room full time! Since the ARTS are a part of our classroom DNA, this will serve as one more way for my students to learn while creating. Help me to secure these amazing materials for my students.
