This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Students in Alief ISD already face a tremendous amount of obstacles compared to students in our more affluent peer districts. High rates of crime, poverty, and single parent households are issues that affect their ability to reach their academic potential daily. Over 90% of our student population is classified as economically disadvantaged based on federal free and reduced lunch rates. However, I take pride in making my classroom a safe-haven for each learner that steps foot inside the doors. Having a very high ESL population, English is often the second or even third language for most of my students.
With all the challenges facing my learners, they still manage to be strong, smart, creative, and caring seven and eight year old children who come to school daily, with passion in their hearts and a yearning for education.
Their passion for learning and generosity transpires to others and although they are still very young, it is evident that my students are on a solid path to becoming model citizens and successful members of society.
My Project
Exercise grows brain cells! Unlike the traditional classroom setting, children need learning environments that are conducive to meeting more than their basic needs. Children need the ability to explore the world at their finger tips, using technology, but they also need to be able to move and be comfortable. When children have their comfort and safety need meet, they are more likely to see the classroom as a "fun" place for exploration as opposed to a boring setting.
In a 21st century classroom, children need the opportunity to be able to move, have hands-on learning experiences, and the power of use technology as a creative resource.
With the use of flexible setting, I have to goal of changing my classroom into such an environment. Allowing students to find a quiet spot on the floor to reflect on learning as opposed to being confined to a desk, is reflective of allowing them the opportunity to explore as opposed to just being taught. In addition, giving them tools such as bean bag letters to spell often misspelled sight words has been proven to be more engaging and successful, when assisting the the development of phonetic language.
Primary school children are extremely creative. When given a tool such as an iPad with time and some added assistance the projects that my students have created are astonishing. However, it is difficult to project and share this projects without the correct adapter. With the addition of a VGA adapter into my classroom, I can take my students creativity from the iPad to the classroom "big screen" with just the click of a mouse. Imagine the smiles on their face as they present and share their work with others. These simply tools will help move my classroom and students from traditional to 21st Century learners.
