My Students
All of the students are diagnosed as children with autism. The students in our class are low functioning. Their frustration tolerance is extremely low. Some students get anxious or frustrated easily. When things are not getting to their way, they often exhibit extreme aggressive behavior such as hitting, kicking, screaming aloud to get out their feelings. It is difficult to calm them down once the aggressive behaviors are emerged. This is related to their limited expressive language and the need of substantial sensory input. As a classroom teacher, I often provide the sensory toys to the students to calm them down. Unfortunately, the sensory toys in the classroom are old and some of the toys are broken. The lack of the sensory toys does not sufficiently feed the students' sensory needs to promote their self regulations.
My Project
We will create a sensory center for our students. A sensory center in a classroom is an essential space for the children to promote their self-regulations and being calm. The students will expose to these sensory toys throughout the school day (e.g. arrival, prior to any academic activity, after lunch and whenever they need to get out their fidgety). The sensory rich play experiences may help the students to regulate their stress. The rhythmical kinesthetic movements of twisting, stretching and squeezing can feel calming. These experience is importance for a child to develop their emotional well being and ability to regulate their own feeling states. Subsequently, the frustration tolerance will be increased. The tactile toys invite the students to touch, manipulate and explore them by stretching, pulling/pinching, squeezing and kneading them. All these actions stimulate sensors deep within the muscles/joints that encourage a child's awareness of their body and generate a bodily felt sense of themselves in that moment. Eventually, the aggressive behaviors will be reduced.
Each child will have their own unique sensory preferences/tolerances and will seek (or avoid) their own tactile experiences to meet their own individual needs.
Therefore, a sensory center with different types of toys offers the child the opportunity to positively engage in their play and reduce inappropriate behaviors for the students which are important in strengthening self-esteem.
