I am in need for calculators for my first grade class. Technology is a resource that keeps growing everyday. Calculators have been a part of this technology growth for years. Calculators are needed in all grades and are needed more as the students get older.
In order for children to be able to feel confident about using calculators, they need to start using them at a young age. I feel it is my job as a first grade teacher to introduce my students to calculators and get them familiar with them. In addition, we have just begun to use Everyday Mathematics this year. The program requires frequent use of calculators. When students are using calculators they are sometimes unaware of all the learning that goes on. I would love a set of calculators for my class to do a variety of things.
First of all, children can learn how to check their work of addition and subtraction when they are done. This is a building block of what will come in the upper grades and how important it is to double check your work. In addition, I can challenge my students to more difficult work, and they can use the calculator to help them. We will begin to get into story problems with addition and subtraction. It is more important that the children can understand the story problem and how to figure it out. The thought process is just as important as the answer. I would like to challenge my students with higher thinking and let them use calculators to aide them in the mathematics of the problem.
We have used calculators one time this year in my classroom when we borrowed them from another. My children were so thrilled and excited, I don't even think they realized all the math work they did that day. Having a calculator is a staple in the suburbs, while it is a luxury in the city. I want to provide my students with as many necessary resources to enhance their learning. The more use children get with calculators the more comfortable they will feel using them in the upper grades for ISAT and other tests. Please help me supply my first grade class with calculators. Thank you!
