My Students
What's better than learning math and science when you're 5 years old? Teaching your friend or parents a math skill or science fact you just learned!
Can I just tell you how much I love my kindergarten class?
My students rush at me the second I swing open the door to welcome them for another fun day of learning, which makes it tricky to shake their hands. I am so lucky to teach a classroom of bright, vibrant, happy kindergarteners. Our school serves a low-income community where 98% of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch assistance, and walking to school can be a scary ordeal given our inner-city setting.
We are all aware of California’s budgetary implosion, and the difficulty in finding well qualified job candidates for our scientific and high tech industries. I love math, and enjoy teaching it to students in a way that will promote their understanding of mathematical relationships, not rote memorization. Kindergarten is a wonderful place to foster a love for math and science because the children are so eager to learn, practice, and teach each other their newly mastered skills and/or concepts.
My Project
‘Practice makes permanent’ rings true, and you can help my students practice and teach their friends their newly acquired math and science skills. Most of our students live in crowded apartments with extended family members. This lack of study space and materials means that many students can’t practice what they’ve learned, or do their homework. The pocket chart & chart stand allow students to create and solve their own math problems, conduct surveys and chart the results and log their science observations. Daily hands-on practice of the state math and science standards will help my students achieve mastery of these critical standards.
Since three different classes share my classroom, a storage cabinet will mean that my students will be able to securely store their cherished math manipulatives and science kits. One of the beautiful things of children is that they not only love to learn, but crave responsibility and the ability to take care of their thing
Please help reinforce my students’ education by donating these basic math tools to my classroom We’re all working so hard to interest the kids in school and to decrease the high school drop out rates in California.
Not only will your kind donation help enrich my students’ education, but you will also be bolstering California’s future work force. Help us help all. Your generosity will be so greatly appreciated by them, and by me.
I hope the Chevron Classroom Challenge hears my plea!
