Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

PD Eastman books were some of my favorites when I was a kid. I can remember feeling so proud of myself for reading such long, hardcover books at a young age. I want to share that feeling, and the wonder I felt when I read these books with my young 1st grade students.

My classroom is full of diverse English-language learners who live in SW Denver.

These kids don't have a lot of books at home, and do most of their reading in school, if not all of it. Their families struggle to make ends meet, and the kids love coming to school to learn and play with their friends. I have worked to make my classroom feel like a family for them, and so far I think I am succeeding!

My Project

The books I am requesting in this grant are all written by PD Eastman. He wrote and illustrated books that are simply written, but incredibly engaging (both the text and the pictures!). They are often marked with a little "An I Can Read Book!" tagline. These books are the ones that I always share when it is time for me to present my favorite books from my childhood to my class. "A Fish Out of Water" is a book I could read a hundred times in a row and not get bored: I just know my students will feel the same way!

The books I am asking for will make a huge difference in my student's young reading careers!

They are hardcover, easy to read, but quite long, and will help build fluency and comprehension skills, as well as confidence and a huge sense of pride each time that back cover snaps closed and a kid sighs and thinks "Ha! I did it! I read the whole thing!". Please donate if you can!
