My students need nonfiction books on their level to read during Reader's Workshop and independent reading time. Additionally, my students need practice breaking words down by their syllables to improve their phonetic spelling.
As a teacher in a diverse San Francisco public school, my students come from all different backgrounds and face a wide variety of challenges. My classroom is an extremely diverse group of smart and engaged students who are eager to learn.
The biggest behavior challenge in my class is that my students are just too eager to learn and share!
While there is a wide range of reading and skill levels amongst the students, everyone is helpful in supporting and encouraging each other. With a superhero classroom theme, my students know that each and every one of them are great and have the superpowers to be a learner and amazing community member.
My Project
Many of my students came to me below grade level in reading. They have made drastic growth (more than a years growth) but still are at levels lower than the majority of the books in my classroom library (inherited from the previous teacher). These books and syllable practice game will help my students who need an extra push to reach grade level in reading and gain the confidence they need as readers in 2nd grade and beyond. Help my students get excited about nonfiction reading at their independent level and practice becoming better readers and writers in a fun and engaging way.
