This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students love to be independent and learn on their own, which is why most of them say centers is their favorite time of day. Centers provide a chance for kids to work on skills at their own pace, in a small group of peers, without a teacher bossing them around. And we need more of them!

My students are wonderful little people from the southwest area of Denver.

Most of them come from economically challenged and often broken homes. Most of them are also English language learners, and this makes our phonics instruction and vocabulary development an extremely challenging and vital aspect of first grade.

My Project

My students need to master how to read and pronounce letter sounds, how to use them to create simple words, and then how to manipulate the letters to build new words and sounds. This word play happens during our literacy block, often during center time. I am requesting word building games and puzzles, word family pocket charts, and tactile sight word cards that allow kids to manipulate letters and sounds, and really experience and experiment with how they make words. Being able to work with high quality materials that will engage my young English language learners will really make a difference in how quickly they master the basic phonics skills they need to help them towards being masterful readers.

Centers are something we do every single day, and the students absolutely love them.

Having new, highly-engaging, and academically focused centers will help keep my students working hard (though they will only think they are playing!) to master the basics of 1st grade phonics.
