My Students

I'm SO excited about meeting my sweet 1st graders in August. This year will be a year of firsts for both my students and me: their first year in a new grade, and MY very first year as a teacher!! Our learning environment will be a safe, fun, and loving place where students' minds and hearts will grow!

My incoming first graders are a part of a wonderful school that sets high expectations for all students.

Our student population consists of African-American, Caucasian, and Hispanic students. Thanks to a grant given to our district, 100% of our students receive free lunch. Our school is focused not only on academics, but on improving students' character and lives as well. This focus is evident through the implementation of special programs designed to encourage positive decision making and increase parental involvement (especially from fathers/father figures). Students are exposed to technology on a weekly basis through class visits to the computer lab. However, technology isn't widely integrated into daily classroom instruction. I believe that incorporating iPads in daily learning centers and whole group instruction will increase student engagement. It will also allow students to access apps, websites, & e-books that are differentiated to fit each of their learning styles and needs.

My Project

Imagine this: Groups of eager 6 and 7 year olds are using iPads to scan QR codes posted around the room. Each code connects them to exciting information on a variety of topics. Their faces light up as they read interesting facts, swipe through photos, watch videos, and record their information. The room is abuzz as each group of students prepare to share their new knowledge with the class. Next...it is center time! Students are spread out in different areas of the room. Some are sitting on the carpet, using an iPad to read or listen to a book. Others are accessing literacy or math apps that fit each student's specific learning needs. There are only two computers available in my classroom for student use. This project will allow more students to improve in reading and math through the incorporation of technology. My students will also be able to learn valuable research skills and expand their knowledge in science and social studies.

Children are very aware of the entertainment capabilities that technology has, and they recognize this from a very young age.

This project will help my 1st graders see the potential of technology and how it can be effectively used in learning. Incorporating iPads in the classroom will allow students to have a wider variety of enhanced learning experiences, therefore helping them strengthen their skills in reading, math, research, and other areas. I can't WAIT to watch my students learn and grow!!
