This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a first grade teacher at a charter school in Chicago. I am looking forward to a great school year and am excited to work with the new first graders!
Each year, it is a struggle to find time to teach handwriting in the midst of all of the other important subjects I teach. In the past, we have used regular composition notebooks (that you can buy at any office supply store) for journal writing, a huge part of our first grade writing curriculum. Unfortunately, the composition notebooks that we require each student to bring to school are really not developmentally appropriate. It is virtually impossible to model and teach correct handwriting strokes when the lines are much too small for the children to write in.
I would like to be able to provide all of my first graders with their very own writing journals, filled with lined paper that is developmentally appropriate for them. Journal writing will be much more fun and less frustrating for my young writers if they have the correct paper to learn to write on!
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
