This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Statistics repeatedly confirm that if a child does not learn to read by the end of first grade, he or she has only a one in eight chance of catching up. It is my vow to my students that 0% of them will fall behind, and this could be made possible with the help of a non- fiction leveled library.
The students in my room are beating the odds each and every day.
These children are raised in a low-income community and do no receive many of the resources they need and deserve at home.
Additionally, as a 3rd-year school in this community, we are often not provided with these same resources that the students need and deserve. We instill a "College for Certain" drive within these students and I am confident that 100% of my students, despite their often grueling circumstances, will one day graduate from college. However, their college education starts now and statistics show that if students fall behind in lower-elementary school, their chances of catching up are slim to none. My students are set on going to college, and I will do anything in my power to ensure that happens.
My Project
With more students every year dropping out of high school and college, its my job as an educator to prepare my students not only to go to college but to graduate! Preparing them by exposing them early on to non-fiction text is my way of helping. My students will be exposed to different types of text in order to prepare them for the rest of their lives. Guided Reading is an important part of our curriculum and having a leveled library will be a great gift for my students. Students will be able to choose books at their level during independent reading when they can read on their own and during Read to Someone when they can read to a partner and talk about the interesting topics in these books. Its all about getting our students to read books at their level and talking about what they read in order to better comprehend.
A leveled book collection is organized in levels of difficulty from the easy books that an emergent reader might begin to the longer, complex books that advanced readers will select.
My goal is that my students this year will move up reading levels and they will reach their 1st grade reading goals, but the only way to do it is to provide them with books at their level and with a wide range of topics.
