My Students

First grade is such a crucial year of development. There are so many curriculum requirements and yet developmentally students still just want to play. As a teacher I have to give chances to explore & play. It's so important to have supplies they can play with and build knowledge at the same time.

Every year I have an a wonderful new group of 1st graders enter my classroom.

Working in a high needs New York State city public school where over 90% of students receive free lunch, I see students who don't have a lot and school is the highlight of their day. I work every year to build on supplies that will best enhance their learning. One thing that we lack in my class are large manipulative puzzles. There is a great sense of accomplishment when 1st graders can work together to put a puzzle together! Then they read through and show classmates what they have done. What great success- they put a whole puzzle together!!!

My Project

Over the summer I had the opportunity to work in a special teacher's learning lab where we as teachers built learning opportunities around a theme with the help of student interest. It was so amazing how much the children learned around this theme in all curriculum areas simply by offering them many opportunities to play and experience. I really want to try to bring this success back to my classroom this year. One way to do that is to offer beautiful bright detailed theme based floor puzzles for students to play with. These puzzles offer wonderful opportunities to sort, categorize, compare, build vocabulary, and much more. They are full of big bold shapes that students will need to rotate, flip, and slide into place to make pictures that build there knowledge of seasons, habitats, forms of transportation, farm animals, letter sounds, numbers, and more. Students will be able to help one another to one, put their puzzles together and two, to discuss and explain what they have made.

Please consider donating to our project.

Right now we have no floor puzzles to work with and I am sure these puzzles will bring a tremendous amount of fun and learning to our school day for this year and years to come. We appreciate anything you can give to help!
