My 1st graders are eager to learn and full of love and excitement. Many are in desperate need of someone to guide them towards success. Each child brings something new and exciting to our classroom as their personalities are coming alive.
I teach at a low income/high poverty school in Ferguson, Missouri.
100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. We are also an ELL school and have a large population of bilingual students.
Our school's budget continues to decrease, but the need for hands on learning continues to grow.
My Project
My district has been focusing on integrating STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) activities into all classrooms. With these materials students will be able to plan, create and test bridges and mazes. They will also be able practice building and knocking down structures to find the best way to build supports. These skills can best be learned through hands on experimentation and cooperative reasoning.
For 1st grade students the ability to engineer, or build and create, is critical to fine motor and problem solving development.
Students need access to materials to fully engage in this practice of active learning.
