My Students

My students are at an age where they need to broaden their exposure to quality nonfiction reading material.

I am a first grade teacher in a rural school.

My class consist of many low income children who can not provide money to pay for extra classroom resources. They often have limited reading materials at home. They need access to a variety of high interest reading materials on a first grade reading level.

My Project

Weekly Reader is a magazine filled with photographs and interesting science, health and social studies topics for young children. It extends students' knowledge in reading, writing, and math as well as science, health and social studies. The magazine provides and extension to our 1st grade curriculum that encourages active student participation. Each child receives their own copy of the magazine to work with in class. Upon completion of our lesson, the students take their magazine home to share with their families.

Weekly Reader is an excellent activity for students in first grade.

I believe it benefits all students regardless of reading level. The magazine provides a real life opportunity to expand a child's knowledge and skills in all subject areas.
