Climate Change Investigations Leading To Activism

My students need supplies to conduct authentic science field work (thermometers, sling psychrometers, sketch boards) and to create high-quality final products.

My Students

"I've faced the devastating effects of climate change and I do not want others to know what it's like to feel so powerless." This quote is from LL, a student who first learned about climate change in my class. Now, she has become an activist for climate education. Her growth exemplifies my goal.

I have the honor and responsibility of teaching Climate Change courses at a public school in NYC where the majority of our students come from low-income situations, many of whom were affected by Hurricane Sandy.

Additionally, most of our students will be the first in their families to attend college. About 45% of our students struggle with learning disabilities, yet students continually strive to exhibit our school's core values of persistence, responsibility, courageousness, kindness, open-mindedness and collaboration. Our school is unique in that we require performance-based assessments instead of relying on a single test to measure learning. Additionally, we conduct authentic field work where we take on the tasks that professionals in the field perform. The students are the lead investigators and their ideas and innovations count! We share our ideas with the local community through forums, public events and public service announcements.

My Project

The materials that I've requested fall into two categories - collecting authentic scientific data and creating high-quality final products. In every investigation, my students collect some type of data. The materials in this proposal will allow them to collect relative humidity data and the thermometers will be used in every investigation as they investigate how the greenhouse effect works, why the oceans are layered and why the ice of the arctic and antarctic is critical to maintaining a balance in our climate system. Finally, the sketch boards will be used when we go out into the field to conduct investigations. The first is that we will be traveling to a local neighborhood hit hard by Sandy. We'll map the flooded area and then determine what areas will likely flood given the same storm intensity, but with additional sea level rise as is expected in the next few decades. Finally the drawing supplies will allow them to create high-quality products to share with the community.

My goal in teaching this class is to empower the next generation of climate activists.

It is critical to get these kids out into the world to experience it and to figure out for themselves what climate change will mean to their futures and the futures of their families. These tools and resources will allow them to engage in an authentic scientific process and will allow them to create high-quality products that they can share with others, spreading the education - like ripples on a pond.
