My Students
Hello, My name is Ms. Byers-Paredes, Special Education Teacher. But, my students have affectionately nicknamed me "Teach". I teach some of the most amazing students. I have twelve students in my classroom, two students with Autism, 1 student with multiple disabilities and 7 students with Down Syndrome. Twelve amazing students, with lovable, vibrant personalities.
My students express themselves in multiple ways and as their teacher, I have learned to understand them and how to engage with them.
I recently had a discussion with a limited verbal student about why he could not use his imaginary cellphone in class. As he continued his phone call, gesturing to me one second, I was in awe of him, holding back a laugh as I explained to him that he needed to tell his friends to call him back after school.
I share this because I encourage my students to use their voices and am willing to meet them where they are at each time I enter the classroom. My goal is to provide my students with the learning opportunities they need to be successful.
My Project
If you walk into my classroom, you might observe my students in varying degrees of play, my students learn through play, Using manipulatives to learn to identify letters, trace letters, sort objects and count. My students have varying disabilities that impact their learning needs. As their teacher, I have learned that my students learn best through purposeful play and small group instructional.
These educational materials that I am asking for such as the tactile letters, sensory exploration tubes, and file folder games create hands-on concrete learning experiences.
My students are able to start gaining pre-tracing skills using tactile letters to explore the shape of the letter and finger trace. The sensory exploration tubes support my students' unique sensory needs while providing unique learning opportunities to engage with their letters and numbers. My goal for many of my students is to be able to identify and count from atleast 1 to 10 and to identify/state the letters of the alphabet.
The students in my classroom are superheroes, despite their delays, they are motivated and happily come to school each day to engage and learn. It's my job to reach them and teach them, these materials will provide them with more hands-on learning experiences and allow them to engage in age-appropriate academic concepts.
