City Island is a tiny island only 1.5 miles long by 0.5 miles wide. Even though it is part of the Bronx, many New Yorkers have never heard of it. Our school (grades K-8th grade) is the only public school on the island for its 4,500 residents. Students must take public transportation off the island to attend high school. Although a majority of our students have at least 1 or both parents working, there are many families from single parent households. About 45% of our families are on public assistance with most living in apartments that are federally funded. City Island has one of the smallest branches of the New York Public Library System.
Our kindergarten students are eager to learn and approach each lesson with excitement, curiosity and enthusiasm.
They absorb so much of what is taught during the day, but unfortunately, many of them do not have the support at home to help them with homework. It is harder for these students to progress in class without being read to or reviewing the day's work. Every day I look forward to seeing their smiling faces as I work with rigor to teach them all they need to know.
My Project
I spend many hours creating homemade Center games for my students some who have sensory issues as well as ADHD. The Count & Compare/ Pop & Add Games will help physically stimulate my young mathematicians that are so eager to learn through hands on colorful games.
The Writing Practice Magic Boards, Reusable Write & Wipes, and the Word Building Blocks are environmentally conscious ways to help my students learn to read and write without wasting tons of paper.
The addition of these new activities will help my students grow into the next generation of strong readers, writers and mathematicians of the world.
More than half of students from low‑income households
