Kindergarten is a remarkable year of change and growth. It is a challenge to meet the high expectations that state standards require while still making Kindergarten developmentally appropriate for 5 and 6 year olds. Above all else, learning has to be fun for the children!
I teach on an air force base.
My students come to me from all over the world and United States. Our school is a Title 1 School and has a high rate of free and reduced lunch, and many times there is only one parent at home due to deployment. Standards vary across the US and world, so children come to me with a range of skills. They need a stable, engaging, and developmentally appropriate environment at school to succeed and be prepared for first grade.
My Project
The materials that I am requesting will help the students in my classroom master basic numeration skills. Without basic number skills such as number identification, counting, and one-to-one skills, students will struggle with math through the remainder of their schooling. Every day students spend time at math centers working with numbers and number concepts. Using these items, children can explore with numbers in a natural, developmentally appropriate way while still practicing essential standards-based skills. These items will keep center time exciting and fun for children while helping them to master basic skills! My students need math games and manipulatives to practice counting, one-to-one correspondence, number quantity and discrimination, and number writing.
The parents of the children I teach work hard every day and risk their lives to protect our freedom.
It is my thank you to them to give their child the strong foundational education that he/she deserves. Working on an Air Force Base is an amazing experience, and I want to teach with the full extent of my knowledge and with the best teaching materials available to help these children achieve all of their dreams and reward them for the sacrifices they are forced to make every day.
