My students need engaging, hands-on math activities, such as counting kits, counting cubes and number rings, to help expand their understanding of number symbols and counting.

My Students
Believe it or not, children love learning math! With engaging, hands-on activities children learn numbers and counting quickly and enjoy themselves as they learn. Developing a positive relationship with numbers and counting early on greatly impacts their attitudes toward math in the future.
I teach kindergarten students in an urban school with a high ELL population in Daly City, California.
My students come from diverse backgrounds and come to kindergarten with a varying knowledge base. The students in my classroom are enthusiastic, bright and motivated learners and need more materials to support and solidify their knowledge and understanding of our curriculum. In the face a high standards in the state of California I am trying to give the children in my classroom an authentic understanding of the kindergarten standards using interactive, hands-on activities that help them to create their own meaning. Having a high ELL population provides it’s own set of language challenges for our students. Our school having limited funds and resources provides even more challenges. I know that with a variety of hands-on math activities and manipulatives my students will succeed at a high level building their understanding of number symbols, counting and number sense.
My Project
I am requesting several different hands-on counting activities found on Lakeshore learning, created for children 3-7. I have found that children learn mathematics well when they have hands-on, engaging activities that help to solidify their understanding. In this day and age there are many research based mathematics manipulatives, games and activities that help children learn early math concepts. I find that number recognition and one-to-one correspondence in counting to be a challenge for kindergarten kids ages 4-6. Without a solid understanding of numbers, the symbol and what they mean, it is difficult to succeed in mathematics, particularly at the high standards that are set for our children. Providing my students with fun math activities will help them to build the solid mathematical foundation that is needed to support their success in math in the future. With these materials my students will be able to explore math more deeply in a way that is enjoyable and meaningful.
These math materials will help my students perpetuate their learning and will help students in years to come as well.
These math activities will help my students to build a positive and enjoyable relationship with math that will help them with their success in math education in the future!
