My Project
My Spanish classroom is a space where I strive to foster a sense of community in which each student feels safe and cared for. In my classes, the students engage each other in Spanish to learn things about the world and about each other. They learn skills like performing typical cultural dances, making typical cultural crafts, etc. All of this gives immediate purpose to the classroom Spanish-language use. My students understand that real communication in Spanish is at the center of everything we do in class. One way I want students to be able to use their communication skills in Spanish is to learn to save lives with it. Based on recent information from the Hawaiʻi Heart Foundation, we know that about 1,000 cardiac arrests happen each year on Oʻahu alone and with only 1 in 3 bystanders being able to respond, an average of only 10% of those who experience cardiac arrest survive. These are dire statistics that can improve if we equip students with the skills and confidence to take quick and appropriate action when needed.
Because students could teach others the lifesaving CPR skills they will have learned in my Spanish class, your help in obtaining Prestan Professional CPR Manikins will not only support students in becoming potential heroes in individual emergency situations, but also in becoming potential agents of positive change in the sustained well-being of their communities.
All in Spanish and with the use of the manikins, students will learn to recognize signs of cardiac arrest, give proper chest compressions, use an AED, and notify emergency medical response (911). What better way to foster a sense of safety and care among my students than to make sure they know that someone in class can literally keep them alive during an unexpected and serious cardiac episode?
