10,000 Words...Helping ESL Students Learn Vocabulary

My students need one set of 90 rhyming sound rubber stamps and one magnetic vocabulary classification center which includes 144 picture magnets.

I teach kindergarten at a K-5 elementary school in High Point, NC (Guilford County Schools).

Each year I have students in my classroom who are learning English as a second language. Most five and six year olds have a vocabulary made up of approximately 10,000 words. My English learning students face the challenge of learning kindergarten skills while also learning a new language. They are trying to build their new language vocabulary to this goal of 10,000 words. Pictures are useful tools to help these students learn vocabulary while learning skills.

Five year olds like to touch and manipulate items as they learn. I would like to give my English-learning students the opportunity to develop vocabulary and build classification skills by sorting picture magnets in a vocabulary classification center. I would also like for them to use rubber stamps of pictures to practice their classification skills. The rubber stamps will also help these students build vocabulary and practice letter sounds and rhyming sounds. While my focus for the grant is helping my English learners, all of my students this year and in future years will be able to use the materials to build vocabulary and practice skills.

I want to provide all my students with the successful learning experiences these materials can provide. I appreciate any support you can give towards helping me purchase materials to build my students’ vocabulary and skills.
