My Students
I work in a large school with a very high immigrant population near the heart of Charlotte, NC. My "cookies," that's what I call all my 71 ELLs (54 direct + 17 monitored) grades K-5, come from all over the world: Mexico, El Salvador, Puerto Rico, Honduras, Vietnam, China, France, Siberia, Philippines, and Africa. Some were born in the US and have only spoken the family's native language their whole life.
We are a Title I school serving a high poverty community.
Their exposure to adequate English language and access to technology only happens in school. My cookies require constant encouragement, love, trust, understanding, empowerment, and appropriate tools to succeed to narrow the achievement gap. They need opportunity to shine and prove to themselves, family, and classroom teachers they can learn.
Yes! THEY CAN LEARN! ... and speak, listen, read, and write. Yes, they may be behind a grade level or more, but they work hard, they try hard, and they fall hard too, but they get up and do it all over again... because they believe, I believe, and you believe they CAN LEARN!
My Project
We are about to start a new project for our ESL class that requires your help. The scholars must learned about the cultural background of their family by talking to family members and taking notes. They will receive a medium foam board to draw images of the culture/country or countries that represent their family background. In class, scholars will then transfer their drawing to a white t-shirt that has been donated to our program. We will use fabric color markers to add bright colors to our drawings.
This project was developed by the children to display their family background and share with others how much they love their family's culture and how rich they believe it makes them feel.
We already receive donation for all our white t-shirts, foam boards that the children already set it up with the questions for their research and carry on bags. Now we need fabric markers to complete this project and bring it to life. We hope to spread culture awareness in our school by wearing with pride our 100% Human with a Rich Background T-shirts (This will be written on the front of the t-shirt) and the back will have the drawings of flags and anything that is important and reflects their family's culture. We are very excited and hope you can help us!
