it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are wonderful kids that are eager to be challenged and inspired. They are a very diverse population in a low income area. We have a supportive school community due to the fact we are a Charter school. However, resources are limited as they are at most public schools. To keep these busy minds challenged and motivated, my students will need classroom materials to help them succeed in 2nd grade. I want to grow lifelong learners, Readers and leaders.
My Project
I have often heard my students say," I hate reading." Over the past 12 years in my teaching career, I have tried to find books that would spark my students' interest in reading. Unfortunately for some struggling readers, books filled with just text, made my students discouraged instead of excited to read. Graphic novels get my students excited to read. I had a Star Wars graphic novel in my classroom that I purchased at a book fair and my students that were not interested in reading, picked this one up and would fight over who would get to read it. As long as they are reading, they are growing and being challenged as life-long learners. I had one of those inspirational teacher's moments that feel your heart with joy the moment I had a student who never finished a book ask me if I had any more graphic novels he could read. He had never encountered a graphic novel and he loved the Star Wars one I had. These are higher grade leveled graphic novels that would motivate and even challenge my 2nd Grade readers. At our charter school, we teach one grade level above anyways, so it is important to have rigorous literature for the students to read.
This project for a variety of graphic novels like Hansel & Gretel, Cast Away, Orpheus, etc This hardcover collection is comprised of high-interest genres, including Greek mythology, fantasy, adventure and fairy tales.
TOON Graphics are comics and visual narratives that bring the text to life in a way that captures young readers’ imaginations and makes them want to read on—and read more. Children also develop their aesthetic sense when they experience the relationship of text to picture in all its communicative power. Thank you.
