Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

No matter how young you are, you can make a difference in the world. The students in my classroom and school will strive to impact and change the world throughout their lives. I teach reading, science, and tutorials to the fifth grade. My school serves a high-need community where approximately 97% of my students qualify for free or reduced lunch. I am a member of Teach for America in the Rio Grande Valley in Texas. Teach for America's vision is that "one day, all children in this nation will have the opportunity to attain an excellent education."

Everyday my fifth graders hand me library and classroom books that are falling apart. They struggle because pages are falling out and the book bindings are deteriorated. Because of our under-resourced library, they constantly search and become frustrated when they can not find books on their reading level. My students WANT to become life long readers. The fifth grade will read 2020 books this year. This will be about 1 book per week per child. This number is significant because it is the year they will graduate from college.

In order to reach this ambitious and feasible goal, my students will need materials that are on a 5th grade reading level for them to read. They will need texts that develop their fluency and critical thinking skills. They understand that reading will be an integral part of any career they choose. Help me develop my students' class library by giving them the books to devour in order to soar above our 2020 goal.

Your help is instrumental for my students to reach our 2020 goal. You will ensure my 5th grader's read stories that are challenging and meaning. You are vital in making my class read and succeed.
