My Students

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow said, "Music is the universal language of mankind" and it is that universality that I hope to use to increase the language and knowledge of my young English Language Learners. (ELLs)

Our school is an innovation school with a STEAM vision - STEM with an A for the Arts!

We are a high poverty school with one of the most diverse student bodies in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. My young ELL students bring boundless enthusiasm and energy to the classroom. However, when it comes to participating they often become shy or unresponsive, whether it is because they are suddenly faced with a large group of listeners, still haven't quite strung the right words together in the right order, or lack the background knowledge. The most important piece in this is that they want to try, they want to participate and that's where making music can help!

My Project

The musical instruments will fulfill a variety of needs - it will help boost the Arts component of the school's STEAM goal. Students will use the instruments to accompany themselves in song; songs that help build vocabulary as well as background knowledge, be it as basic as learning the days of the week, or more complex topics like the solar system.

Young children love music and love to dance.

The instruments will give the kids the benefit of having kinetic reinforcement of the content they're learning through song. But more importantly it will give every student a chance to participate physically, orally or instrumentally.
