My Students
I teach special needs, preschool students, many with significant developmental delays and all have communication needs. My students are energetic, playful and have a desire to learn. They need added support to learn and make progress on educational goals.
Preschool is a time to explore, learn new environments, and learn to interact with peers.
It is also a time to explore different ways to express themselves and to communicate with others. We use many visual aids to assist with communication and learning.
We are an urban school consisting of primarily underprivileged families. We have great parent involvement and a supportive PTA, but many parents cannot afford to provide other financial support.
My Project
My project is designed to enhance our classroom reading area. I am requesting materials that will assist students with learning the upper and lowercase letters both visually and with pre-writing tasks.
Hands-on materials students can manipulate will really enhance the learning experience and will make language acquisition fun and interactive.
I am especially excited about the Wikki-Stix letter tracing cards as a tactile way to learn to write letters. I also want to incorporate more story board activities with felt story pieces and a board as an interactive way to help students learn story characters, setting, and sequence.
Along with specific story felt pieces I have requested a storyboard set where students can place characters in different settings to encourage language/communication and story telling skills. There is also a a craft activity kit where students can create/decorate people/characters that I think will be a fun way to work on self-expression, creativity, and communication skills.
