Dear Potential Donor,
I'm an innovative Third Grade teacher, in a Public School in the South Bronx, of NYC. I have been teaching for several years and truly find that students within this community need to be exposed to literature daily. As a dedicated and caring educator, I wish to provide my students with extensive exposure to literature each day to enable them to expand their exposure to various types of text.
Many of the students lack the resources within their families to purchase literature for home use. More than 86% of the students receive free lunch due to economic constraints. My students are challenged by language and comprehension. Many of them are English Language Learners and are struggling with language, fluency, and exposure to new experiences.
Small group reading instruction has proved to enhance comprehension, fluency and the over all comfort level for reading. Students that I teach desperately need the literature that I have requested to build these skills. It is important for each and every child's school career, as well as New York State testing skills that each student needs.
By obtaining 6 copies of each of these materials for the students, I shall foster student learning of these skills through focused small group instruction. Each student within the small group will learn how to process and analyze the literature. He\She will also learn how to write responses to literature in a Reader's Response notebook weekly. The books that I have requested on the behalf of the students will provide hands on materials that will stimulate their imaginations and extend the thinking of each child.
