Grab a Book and Read with Me!

My project needs classroom sets of three book titles (Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, Among the Hidden and How to Eat Fried Worms).

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Rouse's classroom raised $544

This project is fully funded

I am a 4th grade teacher in an inner-city school. Some of our students struggle so much with reading that getting them to even pick up a book is a challenge. I've found that chapter books are intimidating for many students to read on their own. However, in the past, if a child can read along with me as I read the chapter book aloud, their attitude changes! Picture this, some of the lowest readers, some of the most non-interested readers, some of the toughest I-hate-reading kids in the classroom, eagerly picking up their chapter book and asking, "What page are we on?" when the teacher says it's time for some read aloud time. Picture these same students asking if they can READ AHEAD in the story! Imagine the thrill of seeing these same kids asking a partner to read the chapter book with them. Imagine if you will these same children asking, "Can you read one more page? We don't care to be a little late to lunch!" You don't have to imagine this! It can become a reality, I've seen it happen!! I'm asking for three classroom sets of books in titles that I will read aloud to my class. These are 4th grade level books with high interest stories. With these three classroom sets of books, each child in my room will be able to have their own chapter book to read along with the teacher when I read aloud to the class. They will hear and see me being a good model of fluency. They will gain confidence with knowing they CAN read a chapter book. They will find out that reading is something positive that can take them to other places. They may even change from "low reader", "non-interested reader", "I-hate-reading student" into a student who looks forward to picking up a good book! I want to see this happen in my classroom, will you pitch in to help me make it happen?
