Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
How many times have you seen a child read a book for fun? In the city of Compton, a child reading for fun is a rare sight to see! In my classroom I have students reading silently for thirty minutes each morning and twenty minutes each night. I also read to them for about fifteen minutes after lunch each day. The students really look forward to the time of the day in which I read to them, and they enjoy reading to themselves!
Unfortunately, they struggle from time to time during the silent reading periods because their phonemic awareness skills and vocabulary skills and strategies are weak. My third graders are reading on the kindergarten, first grade, second grade, third grade, and fourth grade levels. I would like them all to read on or above the third grade level, but the language arts program our district adopted is not servicing them to the fullest.
Studies show that if a child is not reading at grade level by the end of the first grade, he or she will most likely never catch up. I do not want that fate for my students, and I am willing to do whatever it takes to reach them! Currently we have anthologies, sound/spelling cards, and some workbooks to service the students' diverse reading needs; I would like to be able to teach them the skills they need to catch up.
In order to do this correctly, I need reading books on their reading levels and teacher resource books for phonics skills, phonemic awareness, etc. These supplies will assist my students in learning the skills they need in order to become better readers!
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
