FULLY FUNDED! Ms. T.'s classroom raised $698
This project is fully funded
Brooklyn's best kept secret is a shabby little Friday afternoon lunch spot called Adam & Ana's. Located in a Clinton Hill middle school, this locals' favorite serves up the best make believe Jamaican patties you'll ever have. Their peas and rice aren't bad either. If Jamaican food isn't your thing, these kids serve up a mean pizza too. The only thing holding them back from a fine Zagat rating is their rugged interior.
Adam & Ana's restaurant is still in its conceptual phase. We created the name for our restaurant using the first initials of our student's names. Our classroom is a 6th grade self-contained special education classroom. Our students have profound developmental disabilities that range from mental retardation to mild autism.
One chilly Friday afternoon in early February, seven students decided they wanted to use their free-play time to cook up a storm. They used the math center as the kitchen: two students "cooked up" a pot of peas and rice (math manipulatives in a pail). Another student used our fraction pie pieces to create a pizza on a sheet of paper. One pulled out our fake money and an imaginary cash register: "Miss, what can I get for you today?"
One student walked around and tried to tell the others how to do their "jobs" as the rest played polite and impolite customers. All of this occurred in front of a bewildered new teacher. I had only been with the students about a week and a half, and was just testing the waters. As I stood by and watched their play, I found this the perfect opportunity for us to meet our year's goal: understanding money.
As it stands, our restaurant is very unsophisticated. Our restaurant's potential is the exciting part. With more resources, it could be an interdisciplinary learning center where students engage in more complex learning and play. A well stocked version of Adam & Ana's could teach skills like using money and making change, the cost of a well-balanced meal, the responsibilities of different restaurant workers, customer service skills, teamwork and more, all under the guise of play.
Here is what we need: a working cash register, play money, a pretend stove, a set of plastic dishware, silverware, pots and pans, play food, chef hats, aprons, rolling pins, playdough, blocks. These supplies would get us well on our way to a fine Zagat rating!
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
