The Glorious World of Graphic Novels

My students need thirty copies of "The Absolutely True Diary Of A Part-time Indian," a graphic novel that will provide exposure to books that are less intimidating.

My Students

My students have never been exposed to graphic novels. They are struggling readers experiencing technological overload. They are moving away from books and thereby losing the necessary knowledge to be critical analytical thinkers of tomorrow. Help me redirect their passions with graphic novels.

We are urban high school students in Georgia.

Most students are 3-4 years behind in their reading levels. The challenges of reading is often just as daunting as the challenges of how to get home safely or how to manage without the financial, emotional or academic support of a parent who values their education. Books are scarce, simply not a priority for those who have economic issues. I have heard great things from other high school teachers who have been able to get graphic novels to their students. My feeling is that the pictures will help maintain their attention and allow a distraction from their poor vocabulary. In addition it may offer context clues as to the plot or transition of the stories. The graphic novel offers a easy approach to what may be thought of as difficult text for my students. Thank You for your help with this project. Great news soon to follow.

My Project

We are embarking on a journey into the graphic novel. It provides more pictures for the struggling reader and lessens their anxiety about the chapter discussions. This purchase assures them that they will have a copy to read and not be confined by limited library access or a lack of funds to buy the book. As a class we will recreate scenes from the story that depict character altering experiences. They will learn the value of being true to yourself, even when it is unpopular to do so.

My students have lost their love of reading and need to be reminded that success is still possible.

They need to be encouraged to know that their future can turn around and improve right along with their reading scores. This donation will provide a missing link in a chain of reactions that can impact their overall success in HS as well as in life. Thanks for your help.
