My Students
Can you imagine a world view that includes only the things you've seen with your own eyes? Many of my students have never been out of the state of North Carolina, and as students at an IB World School, expanding their vision of the world is critical to our success as learners and global citizens.
My students are an energetic and excited group of second graders attending a school in North Carolina.
As part of the school mission and goal we have a program that helps them focus on character education and interdisciplinary studies. They also are encouraged to think as global citizens, and every day I see the gears in their little minds turning as they strive to understand a world that is so much bigger than themselves, their classroom, and their community. While some of my students have remarkable stories of immigrating from a different country and have a vast perspective of the world around them, others have never seen what is outside of their own figurative backyards. I hope to expand their knowledge of their community, state, country, and world to mold them into critical thinkers who are aware of global events and cultures and their influence on us at citizens.
My Project
I am requesting a class subscription to Time For Kids, a wonderful weekly magazine resource that includes many eye-catching and engaging texts about everything from space to politics to geography and so much more. Through receiving Time For Kids, we will be able to have meaningful conversations during morning meeting about current events and cross-cultural awareness, stretch our critical thinking skills, and practice writing response pieces to the topics addressed each week. We can't write response journals, though, until we learn how to write complete, grammatically correct sentences, and self-expression is going to be a skill of paramount importance in achieving our goals this year. For this reason, we need a set of word tiles that can be manipulated for hands-on sentence building and sentence strips onto which we can proudly publish our perfect prose (and poetry, too!). In all, these resources will allow us to be 21st century learners who can think critically and express ourselves.
My vision for my classroom this year is that all of my students will become global citizens, capable of high-level critical thinking and articulate self-expression through mastery of the standards.
Like any journey, to reach the finish line, we need to be equipped with the right tools. A Time For Kids subscription and sentence building materials will be the toolbox with which we can map our success. If we meet our goals, my students will find themselves on a drastically improved academic path.
