Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Imagine a busy classroom with 22 seven year old children. Some are reading to themselves. Some work together to dissect words and letter sounds. Some read in pairs to practice. My classroom also needs a workstation where students can listen to the text while following along in their books.
My students are inner city second graders from low income households.
Many do not have the advantage of having reading and writing materials in their homes. They thrive on having the opportunities to hear great literature, hold books with beautiful illustrations and think about new adventures. They struggle with vocabulary and fluency and need practice to develop these skills.
My Project
Our vocabularies consist of words we understand when we listen to them, speak them, read them and write them. Since the listening vocabulary is the first developed, listening to books while actively reading them helps students expand their vocabularies with multiple intelligences. My English language learners need to be surrounded by oral language as well as be immersed in the printed language. They need to hear words pronounced and used correctly. A classroom listening station will help my students with their language development and make independently listening to literature a more rewarding experience for my budding readers.
I strive to make the love of learning and reading intrinsic in my students.
I feel it is important for them to love to read so that they will continue to practice independently at home and at school. A listening center will encourage their love of reading. Strong early readers make successful life long learners.
