Building a Strong Reading Foundation

My students need letter manipulatives to develop a strong foundation in the letter names, recognition, and sounds to build the base of being life long readers.

My Students

This project is so important because I want to lay a solid foundation in phonological and phonemic awareness to allow my students the best beginning reading experience of their school years. This would not only help this coming school year students but many more 5 and 6 year olds to come.

My group of students are Kindergarteners.

Next year will be a new experience for me having a class of English Language Leaners for the first time in my teaching experience. I teach at an inner city school were the 5 year olds are eager and excited to learn but have very little to no access of educational material outside of the classroom. Being that my school is a Title 1 school, funding is limited and used on the basics like crayons, glues, scissors, pencils, play dough. Title 1 means that the majority of my students (if not all) are free or reduced lunch students. Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

My Project

I want to give my emergent readers manipulative's to practice sorting beginning letters and sounds. I want to build phonemic awareness as the move through their literacy centers. I want to help engage my students in developing their phonics strategies. These activities will help take on a new level of excitement for my students as their can manipulate and feel the different aspects of the letters. This also will allow them to identify letters by their different attributes.

Most of my students come to me not knowing red from blue let alone a letter from a number.

I literally have to get them from recognizing ALL letters and their sounds to reading and writing stories. This takes CONSANT love and support. I truly believe I have a gift and a talent to help my inner city students who need so much. The only thing I am lacking is the funds to buy the materials. I take a hands on approach with my students and it makes the world of difference for them.
