Instrument Shortage!! We're Missing Instruments We Need!!
My students need 12 Orff instruments to enrich their lessons and expand the quality of their performances so that they have the worthwhile musical experiences they deserve!
My students attend a small school, and great resources are scarce in our system for financial reasons. Our students work hard, and our teachers make due with what they have, but there are many schools in the US that have so much technology wise that the students never go without.
My students come from low income homes in west Tennessee.
Our school is a Title One school, meaning we teach students whose lives aren't as luxurious as others. Even though they don't come from great home lives, our students have been taught to be appreciative for what they have. They're mannerly and polite, and never ask for more than what's given them. If they are provided with great opportunities, they take them and run with them and never take advantage of them. Our students are open minded, and they want to know more. They're inquisitive and motivated, and asking them to give one hundred percent is never a question. When my students come to music they come ready to learn, participate, and have fun. They strive for great grades and conduct, and they never stop trying.
My Project
The instruments I have requested will not only provide in the area of great performances, but they will help to expand their minds. When my students come to music, we don't just sing songs and play games. We learn about the music - how to count, read, sing, and play the instruments. We use our imaginations to create and motivate. We learn how to work together and individually. We take the books they're reading and assign instruments to each character according to size, shape, and sound, and seeing them think outside the box to do this is so inspiring. Also, with each instrument, they learn a little about the culture from where the instrument originated. The instruments in Orff music come from all over the world, and our curriculum is based on culture and geography, therefore not only does the student learn how to play the instrument, they learn where it came from, how long ago it was created, who used it, and what it was used for.
I think that if the students know that there are people out there who are willing and generous enough to donate money to a cause such as ours, that it will set a HUGE example for them, and this is such a great example to be set.
I want them to look back at this school and remember great things about it. The elementary school experience should be worthwhile, and if they are able to recognize it, I want them to say "I never would have had that opportunity if I had not attended that school."
