My Students

Fresh vegetables. What a treat to so many of my students! We are starting our first student vegetable garden, growing plants from seeds, and hopefully reaping the benefits. I hope you can help us grow (ourselves and vegetables!)

I live in a rural, high poverty area in Illinois.

I work at a K-5 school. Most of my students are Hispanic with parents who work at the nearby meat-packing plant. We have a number of students on free or reduced breakfast and lunch. For many of these children, this may be their only meal for the day. While the parents work first and second shifts, many students are left to care for younger siblings, including preparing meals.

My Project

We have started our first student vegetable garden. The students have planted seeds and are currently watching them sprout. We would like to educate the students more on eating healthy, growing vegetables, and sharing with the community in which they live. We will use the garden in spring/fall for students and in the summer,with the help of volunteers, it will be a Community Garden for all to reap the rewards.

This project is not only providing students with fresh vegetables, but teaching them a lifelong skill of growing fresh, eating fresh, and sharing with their friends and neighbors!

We hope this project will give many, many families the opportunity to add fresh vegetables to their DAILY meal without any added expense to their already strained budget. There is also a sense of pride for the students in knowing they are growing these vegetables from seed and providing for their families.
