Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
“Today a reader, tomorrow a leader,” Margaret Fuller said, and my students apply this quote in my classroom and dream big every day.
I teach 29 bright and energetic 5th grade scholars in an inner-city environment.
They are very eager to get their hands on new books and learn about the world. Just about all of my students are Latino and qualify for free or reduced lunch and breakfast.
My Project
Esperanza Rising by Pam Munoz is set during the time of the American Great Depression, it examines the plight of Mexican farm workers as they struggle to adapt and survive in the United States. The vast majority of my students are first generation Mexican-Americans and this award winning text will help me capitalize on their intrinsic interests. This text would also enable our classroom to have an in-depth study of theme, mood, and author's purpose.
Any donations will make a direct impact.
As a first year teacher I have been learning a lot about creating a culture of literacy in my classroom. Award winning books combined in a shared reading format yield a high level of learning.
