This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Graphing by hand is challenging and time consuming! While it is valuable to have students invest time to visualize the shape of a function, graphing calculators can help students see graph shapes, explore changes to the graph faster and engage students with technology!
My students are juniors and seniors at a public charter high school in southern California.
The majority of our students will be the first in their families to graduate high school and go on to college. Our students' families work hard with limited funds to support their children's living and learning needs, and often help by donating small supplies to our school. Our students work hard and devote lots of time to better themselves academically and socially, participating in a diverse set of after school activities that range from environmental studies, sports, recreation, community service and academic tutoring.
My Project
Let's face it, kids LOVE technology. They are so excited about their phones and games, why not get them excited about math using technology that can help bring a paper picture to life! These graphing calculators will allow students to learn what the graph of a function looks like AND allow them to explore changes in the function and how those changes create different graphs. Today's youth are so savvy with their phones and games, why not enhance and enrich their math learning with these amazing calculators (which most of our students have never seen, let alone be able to afford).
Having these calculators will help students both learn mathematics more effectively, and will help students understand that technology is valuable for learning as well as for entertainment.
These calculators will be used with multiple groups of students this school year and in years to come.
